Christianity is very simple, and yet very complex. It can be summed up in the simplest phrase: "Jesus saves." It starts looking more complex when we start to explain who Jesus is, what he saves us from, why we need saving, and so on. We have started to fill out those points in the section called "The Story."
We are part of the Christian Reformed Church.
- What is the Christian Reformed Church (CRC)?
I knew you were going to ask that. Check this link: Our Denomination.
We chose the name Church of the Cross because the cross is the center of Christianity. On the cross Jesus died for our forgiveness and salvation. We always include the Spanish "Iglesia de la Cruz" because we are a church for the people of Delhi, many of whom speak Spanish.
We created the logo of the cross with the wheat because it demonstrates how the cross brings us life. Out of the death of Jesus comes life. Out of your own brokenness God can bring life.
Of course! Catholic and Protestant churches agree on most of the basics: same God, same Jesus, same Bible. The style will be different from most Catholic churches, and we teach some things differently. We welcome you to check it out.
Actually church is for peope exactly like you. Jesus said it in his own words, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick...I have come not to call the righteous, but sinners." We believe in grace, forgiveness, and healing. Church is the place to find those those things.
- I can get my spirituality on my own. Plus, churches do some bad things. So why bother with church?
Well, if you're really interested in that question you can get a CD of a sermon that the pastor preached on this topic. The summary is this: despite the fact that churches can be difficult and disappointing places, church was God's idea. God started the church by calling people into a relationship with his Son Jesus. And God will be faithful to his church even though the church isn't always faithful to him. If you want to be at the center of God's activity in the world, be part of the church.
- Church kind of freaks me out, but I'm curious about it. What should I do?
You're not the only one. Really, people say things like this to us all the time. If you can get up the guts to check out a service, you might be surprised at what it's like: friendly, relaxed, but also challenging. An encounter with God is wonderful, yet terrifying. So actually your nervousness shows that you're on the right track.
If you're not ready to attend a worship service, check out one of our discussion groups for people who are skeptical or curious about Christianity. They are great opportunities to interact with people of all different backgrounds who are asking lots of great questions. These run off and on, so ask us about it.
